The last time NNT convened (in 2014), they were riding high on the back of BBC Introducing radio sessions and 6 Music plays, Xfm singles of the week, a T in the Park performance and a reputation for a carefully crafted, mature pop sound which incorporated elements of funk, rock and French chanson.
Their final Edinburgh hometown gig happened the day after the Scottish independence referendum in 2014 and felt like a mixture of political wake and musical release after the NO vote. It was time for a rethink…
In the subsequent period Parisian Fabien Pinardon (songs, production,
multi-instrumentalist) moved to South London, while Belfast-born Sean
Ormsby (songs, voice, guitar) remained in the old NNT heartland of
Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland.
New album Happening grew slowly from file-sharing song ideas and a
steady flow of shared discoveries and recommendations, including
Gainsbourg, Sebastian Tellier, Heatwave and Morricone, all of whom
glimmer in the fabric of this latest collection. An inventive musical
optimism and a certain lyrical resignation: this is the NNT sound.
